Welcome, Future Traveler to Italy!
Deciding to explore Italy by minivan is an excellent idea to enjoy freedom and comfort, especially when traveling with family or friends. As you plan your route through Tuscany, the southern coasts, or historic cities, it's essential to understand a practical but vital aspect of car rental: insurance.
We know that the topic of insurance can seem a bit complicated, especially in a country other than your own. At Trayectis, we want you to feel completely safe and prepared before picking up your minivan. That's why we've prepared this guide to clearly explain what coverage exists and which ones are important for your peace of mind on Italian roads.
Why Is Insurance Important When Renting a Van in Italy?
Insurance isn't just a legal requirement in Italy; it's your greatest support against any unforeseen event. A small dent, a scratch, or, in the worst case, an accident or theft, can turn your dream trip into a headache if you don't have the proper protection. Understanding your coverage allows you to enjoy your trip with much more peace of mind and confidence.
Mandatory Insurance: Your Legal Basis in Italy
By law, every rental company in Italy must include basic insurance:
Civil Liability (CL)
This insurance covers damages you may cause to third parties (other vehicles, people, or property) in the event of an accident where you are at fault. It is mandatory and is included in all our rentals.
Beyond the Basics, There Are Other Types of Coverage to Know That May Not Be Included in the Basic Rental Agreement.
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)
This coverage limits your financial responsibility for damages to the rental vehicle in the event of a collision or accident, regardless of who is at fault. However, it is CRUCIAL to understand that CDW generally has a deductible (or excess). Note: it does not normally cover damage to tires, glass, the underbody of the vehicle, or key theft. TP (Theft Protection): Limits your liability if the minivan is stolen. Like CDW, it usually has a deductible.
RSA (Roadside Assistance)
Offers help if you have problems during your trip (breakdowns, flat tires, lost keys, etc.). The scope of this assistance may vary.
PAI (Personal Accident Insurance)
Covers medical expenses and/or compensation in the event of injury or death to the driver and passengers due to an accident.
Deductible
This is the maximum amount you would have to pay in the event of damage or theft covered by CDW or TP. For example, if the deductible is €1,000 and the damage is €1,500, you would pay €1,000 and the insurance would pay €500.

Why Do You Offer Additional Excess Reduction Packages?
To reduce or eliminate this excess and travel with maximum protection, there are additional coverages you can purchase:
Full Waiver or Excess Reduction (Often Called Super CDW or SCDW)
This is an enhancement to the basic CDW coverage. By purchasing it, you significantly reduce or completely eliminate the excess applicable to collision damage. It is highly recommended to avoid financial surprises in the event of an accident.
Additional Theft Protection (Similar to Super TP)
This supplements the basic TP coverage to reduce or eliminate the excess in the event of theft.
Personal Accident Insurance (PAI): This optional coverage compensates the driver and passengers of the rental vehicle in the event of serious bodily injury or death resulting from an accident during the rental period.
Extended Roadside Assistance
While basic assistance is usually provided, extended coverage can include services such as towing for breakdowns (not just accidents), assistance for flat tires, running out of fuel, or key problems.
But Why Do Insurance Deductibles Exist?
Companies that insure their vehicles have to sustain high fixed costs due to the significant rates charged by insurers. Therefore, to reduce these fixed expenses, companies purchase insurance with high deductibles, as they are more affordable and, consequently, partially reduce these costs. However, to provide their customers with peace of mind, companies offer additional packages that partially or completely reduce deductibles or liability in the event of an accident. While the cost of this package does not fully compensate for the deductible, it helps to avoid additional costs for the customer and reduce the costs the rental company will have to bear in the event of an accident. In reality, what happens is that statistics help companies, and fortunately, more is collected from additional packages than is lost from paying deductibles for accidents, creating a win-win system that benefits both the company and the customer simultaneously.
Large Rental Companies and/or Multinationals Also Take Advantage of Statistics to Their Advantage.
These companies, having large fleets of vehicles, which would entail extremely high fixed insurance costs, tend to purchase only the mandatory insurance, and for the remaining coverages, they operate on a "self-insured" basis. The majority of customers who pay for additional packages tend to cover the costs of accidents caused by a minority, thus avoiding the high fixed costs imposed by insurers. But sometimes we must be very careful because many companies tend to take advantage of customers who don't pay for additional packages, charging minor, sometimes unjustified, accidents to their credit cards, creating a lot of discontent among their customers. If you check out the social media pages of larger companies, you'll see many people complaining about this in the comments on their posts. Obviously, you'll only be able to see these comments if the company hasn't already hidden them.
Rest assured, smaller companies generally insure their vehicles to protect their assets. At Trayectis, our vehicles are fully insured, and with a small additional charge, you can completely eliminate the excess!
Beware of Insurance Offered by Third Parties or Credit Cards: Read the Fine Print!
Your credit card may offer some rental car insurance coverage. However, it is VITAL that you verify directly with your card issuer what specific coverages are included, if they apply in Italy, and under what conditions. Many credit card coverages are secondary (covering only after your primary insurance pays out) or do not cover certain types of vehicles (such as minivans) or destinations like Italy.
There are also third-party companies that sell car rental insurance. They may seem cheaper, but if you have an incident, you'll have to pay the damages or excess to the rental company and then claim reimbursement from the third-party company, which can be a longer and more complex process.
At Trayectis, we offer you the option of purchasing additional coverage directly from us at the time of booking or when you pick up the vehicle. This simplifies the process and ensures that, should you need it, your insurance management is more straightforward through us.
Security Deposit: Beyond Insurance
The security deposit (the amount blocked on your credit card) is not insurance, but rather a temporary hold to cover potential incidents not covered by insurance. It primarily covers:
- Traffic ticket handling.
- Delays in returning the minivan.
- Returning the minivan with an empty fuel tank.
- Other charges for breach of contract (e.g., returning the vehicle very dirty).
Rest assured that if you return the minivan in the same condition as you received it and respect the terms of the contract, the holdback will be released and fully refunded at the end of the rental.
